HOUSTON — Members of the LSU women’s tennis team won five singles matches and a doubles match to highlight play on the second day of the Rice Tennis Classic on Saturday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Both Daysi Espinal and Camila Caliari advanced to the third round of the Blue Flight singles draw before each withdrew from play. Espinal won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, over Lee College’s Madeja Egic, while Chiarelli came from a set down to beat Houston’s Biljana Dimovska, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In the Grey Flight singles draw, LSU’s Camila Caliari won a pair of matches to advance to Sunday’s flight final. She defeated Ashley Martin of Yale, 6-4, 6-3, before devouring Houston’s Diana Martin, 6-1, 6-0.
“We played a lot better today,” LSU head coach Tony Minnis said. “Camila played extremely well, and Marina and Daysi battled back from behind to get a big wins. It’s still really early in the season, but we showed a lot of improvement from yesterday.
The Lady Tigers’ doubles teams split matches in the Blue Flight doubles draw, with the team of Espinal-Caliari advancing easily.
LSU wraps up play in the Rice Tennis Classic on Sunday and will return to Baton Rouge. Fall play continues on Oct. 3-5 with the Hoosier Classic Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
