NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The LSU men’s golf team opened its 2003-04 season by shooting a 7-over par 291 at a rain-soaked Golf Club of Tennessee to stand in a tie for fifth place after one round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate.

The teams were only able to play one round due to the poor weather and will finish up with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

“Overall, we played pretty solid today in these conditions, but we did not make some putts and that hurt us,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We put up some pretty consistent scores and are right in the thick of it heading into tomorrow.”

The Tigers were led by senior Garrett Prather’s 1-over-par 72 on Monday. Heath West, Jeff Riemann, Aaron Smith, and Andrew Lanahan all shot 2-over 73s. Lanahan, a transfer from Midland Junior College, was making his LSU debut, and Prather played in his first tournament in over a year after taking a redshirt last season.

UAB leads the 18-team field after a round after the Blazers fired an 11-under 273 led by Garrett Osborn’s 5-under 66. Two other UAB golfers shot in the 60s to sit 15 shots ahead of second-place South Carolina-Aiken. Ole Miss and South Carolina are tied for third place at 6-over 290, and Georgia State, Baylor, and the Tigers are all tied for fifth.

LSU is only three shots out of second place heading into the final round of the abbreviated tournament. Vanderbilt, the host and defending champion, is tied for 11th place with College of Charleston.

Next up for LSU is a trip to Waco, Texas for the Baylor Intercollegiate Invitational on Sept. 29-30 at Bear Ridge Golf Club.
