Webster Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — LSU cornerback Corey Webster has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Tigers’ 17-10 win over seventh-ranked Georgia, the league office announced on Monday.

Webster, a junior from Vacherie, La., led the Tigers with nine tackles, including eight solo to go along with five pass breakups, an interception and a quarterback pressure. Webster’s interception sealed the Tigers victory as it came with less than a minute left in the contest at the LSU 22-yard line.

The interception was the third of the season for Webster, who leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally in that category. Webster, a converted wide receiver, ranks seventh in school history with 10 career interceptions.

The honor is the second of Webster’s career as he won the award last year after picking off three passes, returning one for a touchdown, in LSU’s 36-7 victory over Florida in Gainesville.

Jabari Davis of Tennessee earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Vols’ 24-10 win over Florida, while Kentucky punter Anthony Thornton earned the league’s special teams award after averaging 46.3 yards on seven punts in the win over Indiana.
