Soccer Shuts Out McNeese State, 7-0

BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team picked up a 7-0 win over the McNeese State Cowgirls on Tuesday at the LSU Soccer Complex.

“I think it was a good win for us, McNeese is a very good team and I think they will do very well in the Southland Conference, and I think tonight we played some good soccer,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos

“We created some good chances and utilized our strength, which is a lot of depth and athleticism. Most importantly tonight we were able to finish our chances.”

The Tigers (3-0) held the Cowgirls scoreless for the third-straight season and improved to 4-1 all-time against them.

LSU has never lost to an in-state opponent under Fotopoulos and ran their winning streak against non-conference opponents to 11 games.

Junior forward Artie Brown recorded her second career hat trick, all three coming in the second half, and now has five goals this season. Brown’s other hat trick came in her first college game, also versus McNeese State on Aug. 31, 2001.

Freshman forward Joleen Phillips scored two goals and now has four on the season.

Fellow freshman Michelle De Cespedes added her third goal and forward Stacy Bishop scored her sixth and added an assist.

The Tigers outshot McNeese State, 30-3, and recorded 21 shots on goal.

LSU took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals from Bishop and Phillips and then put up five second-half goals to coast to the victory.

LSU will next be in action this weekend when its hosts the Tiger Classic II in Baton Rouge. The Tigers will play Birmingham Southern at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and then face Loyola (Md.), on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

McNeese State will face Loyola on Friday at 5 p.m. to open the tournament and will then square off with Birmingham Southern on Sunday at 11.
