MOBILE, Ala.

— Junior men’s golfer Heath West fired a final-round 2-under-par 69 to win the Labor Day Invitational individual title at the Country Club of Mobile on Sept. 1.

West, a native of Dothan, Ala., shot a 1-under 212 for the tournament held in his home state. West, who will be a junior for the Tigers this season, edged Georgia junior David Denham by one stroke for the win. West was the only golfer in the tournament to finish under par. West placed sixth in the same event last year and lost in a playoff two years ago.

“This was a good win for Heath in a very competitive tournament,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “He had come close to winning the last couple of years so it is nice to see him finally do it. Jeff (Riemann) also played well and it is good to see because these are two guys that we are really counting on for this season.”

“Heath will receive some quality amateur ranking points for this big win which will move him to the top portion of the rankings, boosting his chances for making the next Walker Cup Team,” said Jones. “This is also a big win for the program.”

LSU junior Jeff Riemann, placed eighth in the tournament, shooting a 3-over 216. Riemann, a native of Gulfport, Miss., was tied for the lead going into the final round.

Jeff Riemann also had a nice event, finishing in a tie for fifth after leading going into the final round,” said Jones. “Other than one bad swing which cost him a triple bogey, we had the two best players in a star-studded field. Success breeds success, and hopefully there is more to come.”

The Tigers open the season in the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate on sept. 22-23 in Nashville, Tenn.
