BATON ROUGE — LSU junior Ben Wilkerson is one of 38 players from across the country who have been named to the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, the awards committee announced on Friday.
The Rimington Trophy was established in 2000 and is given annually to college football’s top center. The award is named for Dave Rimington, college football’s most decorated offensive lineman. Rimington is the only player to win the Outland Trophy twice and he also captured the Lombardi Rotary Award in 1982.
Wilkerson enters his third season as LSU’s starting center during which time he has developed into one of the nation’s top offensive linemen. Wilkerson, a native of Hemphill, Texas, enters the 2003 season rated as the No. 3 center in college football by Lindy’s Magazine as well as being called the quickest lineman in the Southeastern Conference by The Sporting News.
In two years with the Tigers, Wilkerson has started 19 games at center and LSU has a 14-5 mark in those contests.
