BATON ROUGE — Former LSU standout LaBrandon Toefield started at running back and ran for a touchdown on Friday for Jacksonville as the Jaguars defeated Miami, 27-23, in an NFL Preaseason contest.

Toefield had eight carries for 28 yards including a 2-yard score with three seconds to play in the half to bring the Jaguars within three points at halftime, 10-7. He also caught a pass for 15 yards.

In the first week of preseason games, Toefield averaged 4.1 yards on eight carries as the Jaguars defeated Minnesota, 16-14. Toefield started in place of veterans Fred Taylor and Elvis Joseph, who are both out with knee injuries.

Toefield, a fourth round pick in last year’s NFL Draft, played three years with the Tigers and rushed for 2,291 yards and 26 touchdowns on 511 carries. His 19 rushing touchdowns in 2001 tied a Southeastern Conference record.

Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio told the Florida Times-Union, “Toefield looks like he belongs in this league. The kid runs with poise.”
