Tigers Open Fall Practice With Two Sessions

BATON ROUGE — The LSU football team opened its fall camp with two practice sessions here on Wednesday as the varsity worked out in the afternoon followed by a night practice for the freshmen.

The Tigers will continue with the split practice routine through Friday and then the team will practice together as a full squad for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

“The varsity practice was a really good one,” LSU coach Nick Saban said. “The pace was what we needed for it to be in order for us to get what we want out of these first three days. I thought we got a lot accomplished and I think we got some good concepts taught on both sides of the ball.

“We didn’t have so many guys at practice that we couldn’t get everybody reps. I thought the attitude and intensity of practice was about as good as we could expect it to be at this time.”

The Tigers opened the day on Wednesday with a compliance meeting followed by the second part of the conditioning test, which had the team running a series of 110-yard sprints. Saban praised the squad after seeing the results of the conditioning test.

“Looking at the results of the conditioning test, this is the best that any team that we have had since we have been here has come back in shape,” Saban said. “Two years ago, the SEC Championship team was the best we have had to this point. This year, we had 78 of the 102 players who took the test pass the test.

“Almost half of the team had more than 70 total points on the test which is the highest we have ever had. We had more guys pass the sprint test, more guys pass the strength test, and the same number pass the 110 test. So we really feel good about the commitment that our players made in the off-season in the summer conditioning program.”

Saban also noted that of the 25 freshmen that took the strength and conditioning test, 20 passed.
