BOSTON — LSU point guard Temeka Johnson dished a team-high five assists in the United State’s Young Women’s 82-61 exhibition victory over Brazil on Tuesday at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena.
Johnson, a first alternate who was added to the team late, played 16 minutes in the first of six “friendly matches” in preparation for the 2003 FIBA World Championship For Young Women which will be held July 25 through Aug. 12 in Sibenik, Croatia.
The 5-3 All-American added a pair of rebounds and was 0-of-1 from the field.
Fellow Lady Tigers’ All-American and sophomore-to-be Seimone Augustus started for the USA’s Young Women’s team and scored two points on 1-of-5 shooting. She added three rebounds and an assist in 18 minutes of play.
The series of friendlies continues on Wednesday, July 16, with the USA Young Women and Australia competing at 1 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
On July 17, Australia and Brazil are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. at Matthews Arena and the USA Young Women will practice following that contest.
With the arrival of the USA Pan Am Games Team on July 17, the two USA squads are slated to scrimmage on July 18 at 1 p.m. at the Reebok Campus gym in Canton, Mass.
On July 19, the USA Young Women will play Brazil, followed by the USA Pan Am squad versus Australia at approximately 3 p.m. On July 20, the doubleheader will feature the USA Pan Am Games Team competing against Brazil followed by the USA Young Women against Australia.
