NEW YORK — WNBA President Val Ackerman announced today that San Antonio Silver Stars guard Marie Ferdinand will represent the Western Conferences as a reserve in the 2003 WNBA All-Star Game.

Ferdinand replaces Houston’s Tina Thompson, who sprained her left ankle in practice on Monday and will be out for at least a week.

Los Angeles Sparks Head Coach Michael Cooper, coach of the Western Conference All-Stars, will announce Thompson’s replacement in the starting lineup prior to the game.

Ferdinand is 11th in the league in scoring average (14.8), tied for fourth in steals per game (1.81) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (47.8). She is also averaging 3.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

The WNBA is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the WNBA All-Star Game in 2003 by returning to its inaugural site, New York City.

This year, the All-Star Game makes its broadcast debut on ABC at 4 p.m. EDT, following the All-Star pregame Show on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m.
