Volleyball Signees Dominate Texas All-Star Games

BATON ROUGE — LSU volleyball signees Daniela Romero and Kassi Mikulik earned Most Valuable Player honors in the two divisions of the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star games on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas.

The pair both signed National Letters of Intent with the Tiger volleyball program last fall and should begin play for LSU during the upcoming 2003 season.

Romero earned MVP honors for the West squad in the Division I match, featuring players from Class 4A and 5A schools. The James Martin High School product tallied 31 assists despite a losing effort as the West fell to the East squad in five games, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 21-25, 15-8.

In the first game, the West took the lead behind nine assists by Romero. After falling behind 2-1, the West evened the match in the fourth game as the Arlington, Texas, native recorded four kills and three assists. The East took the decisive game five 15-8 to win the match.

In the Division II game, Mikulik earned MVP honors as the East defeated the West, 27-26, 25-9, 23-25, 25-22. Division I consists of players from Class 3A schools and lower.

The Flatonia product crushed 15 kills and recorded two blocks for the East in the winning effort. She proved unstoppable as her team cruised to the four-game victory.

The LSU volleyball team kicks off the 2003 season with the Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge on Aug. 30. The Tigers will host UAB, Virginia and Centenary in the two-day tournament.
