Former Tiger Davis Runner-Up in USATF Long Jump

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Despite equaling the distance of eventual champion Dwight Phillips, former LSU standout Walter Davis earned runner-up honors in the men’s long jump at the USA Track and Field Championships at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Davis, a six-time national champion while competing for the Tigers, turned in an impressive jump of 27-0 1/2 on his second attempt before passing on his final four jumps of the competition. In the sixth and final round Phillips, the world indoor champion in the long jump, matched Davis’ mark of 27-0 1/2 and was crowned the victor by virtue of a longer second jump mark.

Also participating in the men’s long jump was current Tiger John Moffitt. Moffitt, who earned All-American honors in the event last week at the NCAA Championships, turned in a leap of 24-11 1/4 to place eighth overall.

On the track, another former Tiger, quartermiler Derrick Brew, also turned in an impressive performance. A four-time All-American while competing for LSU, Brew finished fourth in the men’s 400 meters, recording a time 45.05. Tyree Washington won the event clocking 44.33.

In prelim action, former Lady Tiger Joyce Bates automatically advanced to the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles (13.20), while current LSU junior Muna Lee just missed advancing to the finals of the women’s 100-meter dash, finishing 10th in the semifinals with a time of 11.59.

Action from the USA Track and Field Championships will conclude Sunday.

Former and current LSU athletes will pepper the field of competition as Davis and Moffitt will return to action in the triple jump, Russ Buller will compete in the pole vault, Bates will continue competition in the 100-meter hurdles and junior Nicole Toney will see action in the women’s triple jump.
