PALO ALTO, Calif. — Just a week removed from helping the Lady Tiger track and field team to a sweep of this year’s NCAA titles, LSU short sprinter Muna Lee returned to the track Thursday at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field for the USA Track and Field Championships.

Lee, who last week anchored the Lady Tigers to the 2003 national title in the 4×100-meter relay, advanced to the semifinals of the 100-meter dash during the first day of competition, winning her heat with a time of 11.16.

Lee had the third fastest qualifying time overall, finishing behind Olympian Torri Edwards (11.00) and Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers (11.15).

Derrick Brew, a four-time All-American while competing for the Tigers (1999-2000), also advanced to the next round of competition, winning his heat of the 400 meters with a time of 45.78.

Lee and Brew will each return to action Friday at the USA Championships, running in the semifinal rounds of the 100 and the 400 meters, respectively. Lee’s semifinal heat will begin at 6:10 p.m. (PST) and Brew’s will follow at 7:50 p.m. Also representing LSU in Friday’s competition will be jumper John Moffitt. Moffit will participate in his first of two events, the long jump, beginning at 5:50 p.m.

On Saturday, Lee will begin competition in the 200-meter dash preliminary round. On Sunday, Moffitt and NCAA champion Nicole Toney will compete in the triple jump.
