BATON ROUGE — On the heels of his 25th NCAA national title, LSU track and field Coach Pat Henry was named the women’s Mondo national outdoor track and field coach of the year in voting by his peers, the Division I Coaches Association of the U.S. Track Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Henry’s women’s team completed a sweep of the indoor and outdoor national championships this past Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., as the Lady Tigers scored 43 points on the final day to defeat Texas by 14 points. The LSU men finished fourth.
“It a very nice award and I appreciate it very much,” said Henry Tuesday. “It’s an award to honor our entire program. It’s not just me, it’s very much the athletes, the staff and the entire program that is being honored.”
The Lady Tigers’ NCAA outdoor title marked their 13th in program history and the first since the 2000 season. LSU has now won both the women’s NCAA Indoor and Outdoor crowns during the same season nine times in the program’s history, the previous sweep coming in 1997.
Henry, already named the Mideast region coach of the year, guided the Lady Tigers to a third place finish in the SEC Championships and then won the Mideast regional title by 33 points. His Lady Tigers ranked third in the final team power rankings.
Minneosta coach Phil Lundin was named the men’s Mondo outdoor coach of the year.
