BATON ROUGE — LSU assistant track coach Dennis Shaver was named the Assistant Coach of the Year for Women’s Sprints/Hurdles it was announced by the United States Track Coaches Association.
The honor, the first of its kind in Shaver’s career, is national award voted on by his fellow peers and colleagues of the USTCA.
Shaver, a Salina, Kan., native, is currently in his eighth season as the Lady Tiger’s sprints and hurdles coach. Highly regarded as one of the premier sprint coaches in the country, Shaver has directed his athletes 18 individual NCAA champions, five national champion relay teams and All-America awards.
This season alone, Shaver coached LSU standouts Muna Lee and Lolo Jones to national titles during the indoor season. Lee swept the short sprint events at the indoor nationals, winning both the 60 and 200-meter dashes, while Jones was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles.
During the outdoor season, Shaver’s athletes were equally successful. He guided the Lady Tigers to a collegiate record in the 4×200-meter relay, the NCAA title in the 4×100-meter relay and a near world record breaking performance in the shuttle hurdle relay.
