LSU’s Humphries Wins Louisiana Amateur

SHREVEPORT, La. — Former LSU men’s golfer John Humphries won the 2003 Louisiana State Amateur Tournament in a playoff on Sunday at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport.

Humphries, a senior on the LSU squad this past season, won the prestigious championship on the first playoff hole over Tommy Brennan of Covington, La. Humphries and Brennan each fired a 7-under par 288, with Humphries shooting a 2-under 70 in the final round and Brennan shooting a tournament-low 66 on Sunday.

Humphries, a native of Alexandria, was one stroke behind Shreveport’s Charlie Carr entering the final round. His father, Earl, finished as the runner-up in the event in 1999.

Humphries was recently honored as an honorable mention selection on the 2003 Ping Division 1 All-America Team and was also a member of the Southeast All-Region Team. He was also a First Team All-SEC selection and was the Player of the Year on the 2003 LSWA All-Louisiana Golf Team.
