Humphries Named Honorable Mention All-America

NORMAN, Okla. — LSU senior men’s golfer John Humphries was named to the 2003 Golf Coaches Association of America Division I Ping All-America Team, it was announced Saturday by the GCAA.

Humphries was named an Honorable Mention selection, the first All-America honor of his career. He is the first LSU golfer to be named an All-American since Alan Morgan was an Honorable Mention selection in 2001. The award caps a busy month of awards for the Woodworth, La., native. Humphries was named a First Team All-SEC selection on May 6, and was named to Player of the Year on the 2003 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Golf Team on May 16. Humphries advanced from local to sectional qualifying for the 2003 U.S. Open earlier in the month, and will participate in the sectional June 2-3 at a site to be determined.

Humphries had one of the best seasons in LSU history in 2002-03, as he posted a 72.3 stroke average, 23 rounds of par or better, six top-10 finishes, and one victory. Humphries’ scoring average this season is the seventh best all-time in LSU history and his 11 career top-10 finishes are tied for eighth-best in school history. He placed in the top 10 in six of his final nine tournaments during the season. Humphries won his first-career tournament on March 2 by claiming medallist honors at the 2003 LSU Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge.

“I am very happy for John to receive such an honor because he has been a great player here for several years and he had a tremendous season,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “John did everything we asked of him and it is good he was rewarded this way because he is definitely one of the best players in the country.”

Humphries will compete in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open on Monday and Tuesday. The U.S. Open will be held June 12-15 in Olympia Fields, Ill.
