BATON ROUGE — The LSU track and field team returned home and brought back some impressive performances in its final meet of the season at the Bernie Moore Stadium.
Several Tigers and Lady Tigers had outstanding finishes against the 10 other teams competing, according to LSU head coach Pat Henry. Others recuperated in preparation for the SEC meet in two weeks.
Highlighting the day for LSU was Kelly Willie, a freshman who clocked a sizzling 20.51 in the 200-meter dash. That feat, only Willie’s second time this year to compete in the 200, gave him the fourth best time in the nation this season.
“That was a really good effort,” Henry said. “It was a heck of a run for a freshman and for his second 200.”
The Tigers swept the top three spots in the men’s javelin competition, led by Luke Kinnard with a throw of 212-3. Keith Nunez (210-8) and Taylor Bobo (203-10) were second and third.
Lolo Jones and Zamyal Jackson had impressive outings for the Lady Tigers, finishing first and second in the 100-meter hurdles. Althea Thomas won the 400-meter hurdles with a 59.19.
Nicole Toney finished second in the long jump and topped her season’s best at 20-4 1/4. Teammate LaToya Payne was third with a 20-2 1/2.
Despite withholding several of his athletes from the competition, Henry was pleased with the outcome of the meet. “We are right where we need to be,” said Henry. “We just need to get a few more people healthy.”
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will have ample time to do just that as they have a week off before the SEC Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., May 15-18.
