AUBURN, Ala. — Senior LSU men’s golfer John Humphries will begin play in the 2003 NCAA East Regional on Thursday morning at the Auburn University Club in Auburn.
Humphries, a senior from Woodworth, La., is one of six individuals competing in Auburn this weekend and the lone golfer from the Southeastern Conference. The regional features 27 teams and six individuals in which the top 10 teams and top two individuals not affiliated with any team in the regional advance to the 2003 NCAA Championship May 27-30 in Stillwater, Okla.
Humphries is making his third-straight appearance in NCAA play. His best finish came last season when he tied for 45th place in the NCAA Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark., shooting a 7-over par 223. Humphries is coming off of a fifth-place tie at the 2003 SEC Championship as he fired a 4-over par 214 for his sixth top-10 finish of the season and third-consecutive heading into the regional.
Humphries heads into the regional with a stroke average of 72.3, nine top-20 finishes, six top-10 finishes, 21 rounds of par or better and one victory. He was named to the All-SEC first team last week, earning that honor for the first time in his career.
Humphries is paired with Gareth Maybin and Ryan Gildersleeve of South Alabama and will tee off at 1:03 p.m. Thursday on the back nine. The other three individuals will follow at 1:12 p.m. Those golfers are Virginia Commonwealth’s Ted Brown, Andrew Svoboda of St. John’s, and Coastal Carolina’s Alvero Velasco.
First-round action begins at 7:12 a.m. on Thursday. Rounds two and three will follow on Friday and Saturday.
