BATON ROUGE — LSU senior men’s golfer John Humphries was chosen as one of six individuals to participate in the 2003 NCAA East Regional from May 15-17 at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala.
Humphries, who was named to the All-SEC first team on Monday, will take part in NCAA-regional play for the third time in his career. The Woodworth, La., native finished in a tie for 104th place as a sophomore in 2001 at Williamsburg, Va., while LSU finished 19th overall. Last season, Humphries tied for 45th place and helped lead his team to a 16th-place finish in the NCAA Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark.
Auburn will host the East Regional, one which features six schools from the Southeastern Conference. Auburn is seeded fifth in the region, SEC champ Florida is fourth, Tennessee and South Carolina are seven and eight, Vanderbilt is seeded 10th, and Alabama is the No. 16 seed. Georgia made the field as the seventh school from the SEC and will play in the NCAA West Region in Auburn, Wash.
“I am very happy for John to get to play in a regional in his final season but am disappointed that we could not go as a team,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “Nevertheless, this is great for John because he is an excellent player and will do a great job there next weekend.”
Humphries led LSU this season in every major statistical category. He had a 72.3 stroke average, 21 rounds of par or better, six top-10 finishes, and nine top-20 finishes. He also tied for fifth place at the 2003 SEC Championship last month in Sea Island, Ga.
