Softball Overcomes Cold, Colonels, 2-0

THIBODAUX, La. — Despite the frigid temperatures at Lady Colonel Field, the 11th-ranked LSU softball team defeated Nicholls State, 2-0, on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 30-11 on the season. The Lady Colonels fell to 18-19 on the year. LSU swept a pair of games from Nicholls State this season after defeating the Lady Colonels, 5-3, in Tiger Park in March.

“It was nice to come out here and get a win despite the cold temperatures and bad weather,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “You only have so many chances to get games in and you have to take advantage when you get to play.”

Kristin Schmidt threw a complete-game shutout for the Tigers to improve to 18-9 on the year. She scattered just two hits and one walk, while striking out eight.

“I thought Kristin went out and threw a great game,” said Girouard. “She was in control of her pitches and our defense made the plays when we needed them to.”

Leigh Ann Danos went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Tigers. LaDonia Hughes scored both LSU runs as she went 1-for-2 on the night. Tessa Lynam also recorded a pair of hits with a 2-for-4 night.

The Tigers jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Hughes walked. After stealing second, she scored on a single to right field by Danos.

LSU left the bases loaded in the top of the second inning. With one out Alicia Owen singled up the middle. With two outs, Megann Steege singled to right field before Sara Fitzgerald singled to left field. Hughes popped out to the pitcher to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers expanded the lead to 2-0. Hughes led off the inning with a walk. After she stole second, she advanced to third on a single to right field by Lynam. The second RBI single of the night for Danos scored Hughes from third.

Nicole Wagner took the loss for Nicholls to fall to 4-10 on the season. She allowed two runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

LSU returns home to host Kentucky in a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Tiger Park this weekend. The Tigers will take on the Wildcats in a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. and conclude with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
