BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Four former LSU women’s tennis players and one current Lady Tiger competitor were each named to the 2003 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll on Thursday announced commissioner Mike Slive from the league office in Birmingham, Ala.
“In my opinion, this is the most important award that our players can receive,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We want them to come to LSU and earn a quality education as well as compete athletically in the most competitive league in the nation. I’m extremely proud of each of these five girls for their hard work in the classroom.”
LSU’s Rocio Fantilli earned her first SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades on Thursday, while former Lady Tiger players Tami Botts, Bruna Colosio and Kelly Craycraft were each awarded with the fourth honor of their careers. LSU’s former player Amy McIlhaney garnered her second-consecutive SEC Academic Honor Roll award after transferring from to LSU from UNC-Greensboro in 2000.
The prestigious annual awards are given to the student-athletes that can meet three criteria in the classroom. They must have a 3.0 grade-point average for either the past year or for their career, they must be a sophomore or higher in academic classification and they must have 24 semester hours countable towards a degree.
A total of 59 student-athletes were named to the 2003 SEC Women’s Tennis Academic Honor Roll with Vanderbilt topping the list with a total of eight players on the academic roster. Alabama, Kentucky and South Carolina were close behind with seven honorees.
The LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. as the Lady Tigers begin NCAA Tournament play against the 28th-ranked Texas A&M Lady Aggies in College Station, Texas.
