BATON ROUGE — After recording one of the most successful seasons in seven years, LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory announced the signing of Vanessa Freeman from Bartlett, Texas, on Wednesday.
The 6-2 middle blocker played for coach Marian Kelso at Granger High School in Granger, Texas. The Lady Lions advanced to the 2002 state semifinals before falling to Round Rock-Carmine. With 12 kills in her state tournament match, Freeman was named to the Class A Texas State All-Tournament team.
She became the first female athlete from her high school to sign with an NCAA Division I institution.
“Vanessa is a tremendous athlete and will make a wonderful addition to our program,” said Flory. “She is the type of player I love to coach and I think that she has limitless potential.”
The Tigers will begin the 2003 season at home in the Tiger Classic on Aug. 29 against Centenary at 12:30 p.m. The two-day tournament also features matches against UAB and Virginia.
