Schmidt Named LSWA Pitcher of the Week

BATON ROUGE — A three-win, two-shutout week for LSU pitcher Kristin Schmidt and a batting average of .769 for Louisiana-Lafayette outfielder Danyele Gomez earned the pair this week’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association Players of the Week honor for state college softball.

Schmidt was 3-0 on the week with two shutout victories and a 0.37 ERA. The junior allowed just one run and nine hits in 19.0 innings pitched. The one run allowed broke a streak of 26 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. Schmidt ended the week with a nine-game winning streak and during the week surpassed the 200-strikeout mark for the season. Schmidt put together a 2-0 win over Nicholls State last Wednesday with wins Saturday (5-0) and Sunday (11-1) over Kentucky.

Gomez was 10-for-13 in the Cajuns’ weekend Sun Belt Conference sweep of New Mexico State with three doubles, four home runs, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. The freshman from Metairie hit two home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of game two on Sunday and drove in four runs that inning. The first of the two homers set the freshman school record for home runs with 13. Her present total of 14 leads the SBC and seven of her 10 hits over the weekend were for extra bases.

Other players nominated for hitter of the week were Lindsey Danzy of Northwestern State, Nicole Edlund of McNeese State and Megann Steege of LSU. Also nominated for pitcher of the week were Jessica Denham of McNeese State, Crista Miller of Northwestern State and Rachel Reese of Louisiana Lafayette.
