Former All-American Peel Named to NPF All-Star Team

Peel, Sneed Invited to USA National Team Camp

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Former Tiger All-Americans and current assistant coaches Britni Sneed and Trena Peel were selected to participate in the USA Softball Women’s National Team camp from June 4-8 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The pair were two of 45 athletes selected to participate in the camp. These players will compete for spots on two teams that will represent USA in international competition this summer.

The National team will represent the USA at the U.S Cup in Honolulu, the Canada Cup in Surrey , B.C., Canada and the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. The USA Softball Elite Team will compete in the Canada Cup as well as the Japan Cup in Yokohama, Japan.

Sneed, a finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year honors in 2002, was a three-time All-American for the Tigers. The Houston native was the 2002 SEC Pitcher of the Year and was voted the 2001 SEC Player of the Year while being selected MVP of the SEC Tournament two years in a row. A 2002 graduate of LSU in kinesiology, she is currently serving as one of LSU’s student assistant coaches.

Peel, an Aurora, Colo., native, was the SEC Athlete of the Year and earned second-team All-America honors in the outfield last season. Named to the SEC All-Tournament team, she was one of 25 semifinalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award. In addition, she led the nation in triples with a school and SEC record 14, two shy of the NCAA record. Peel is also currently serving as one of the LSU’s student assistant coaches this season.

Included in the list of 45 athletes selected for the camp are 2000 Olympic gold medallists Leah O’Brien-Amico, Laura Berg, Crystl Bustos, Lisa Fernandez, Stacey Nuveman and Michelle Smith. Current and former SEC players selected to participate include Nicole Barber of Georgia, Iyhia McMichael of Mississippi State, Kellie Wilkerson, currently an assistant coach at Mississippi State and Kelly Kretschman, formerly of Alabama, now an assistant coach at Kentucky.

When the U.S. Women’s National Team travels to Santo Domingo, it looks to defend their 1999 championship gold medal and add its fifth consecutive gold medal to the Pan Am record books. In Pan American Competition, the women have tallied a 55-3 overall Pan Am record since their first title in 1979.
