Women’s Tennis Seeks Fourth-Straight Win at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The LSU women’s tennis team will attempt to keep its three-match winning streak alive on Wednesday as the Lady Tigers travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for a non-conference duel against the Purdue Boilermakers at 1 p.m.

“We’re at the point in the season where every match is critical,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We put together a string of really good wins last week, but I think that we still need to pick up a win against Purdue in order to solidify our chances of making the NCAA Tournament. Purdue is a good team and they will be very tough to beat on the road.”

LSU heads into Wednesday’s contest with an overall record of 11-10 on the season and a 3-4 mark in road matches. Last week, the Lady Tigers compiled a 3-0 record and defeated the 26th-ranked Tulane Green Wave, 4-3, at the Goldring Tennis Center in New Orleans.

Purdue enters the matchup with an overall record of 8-9 on the season after defeating both Penn State, 5-2, and Ohio State, 4-3, over the weekend. Ohio State, the 47th-ranked team in the nation, proved to be the second ranked opponent that the Boilermakers have knocked off this season. Purdue also registered a 4-3 victory against No. 43 Missouri on Feb. 9.

“Purdue has a really solid team,” Minnis said. “They limit their mistakes and play some very consistent tennis. Right now, we just need to continue to play the way that we have been playing in order to keep our momentum up heading into Arkansas on Saturday.”

In a rivalry that began in 2000, LSU and Purdue have faced off three times with the Lady Tigers winning all three contests. LSU defeated the Boilermakers by a score of 7-2 in the series opener before taking the last two matches, 5-2.

The LSU women’s tennis team will look to remain undefeated against the Purdue Boilermakers on Wednesday as the Lady Tigers compete in their first of two road matches this week at 1 p.m. in West Lafayette, Ind.
