Baseball Jumps to No. 8 in Collegiate Baseball Poll

BATON ROUGE — For the second consecutive week, the LSU baseball team is ranked in the top 10 of the Collegiate Baseball poll, as the Tucson-based newspaper moved the Fighting Tigers up two spots to eighth.

The Tigers just missed cracking the top 10 in the other two polls. Baseball America placed the Tigers in the 11th spot in its poll, up one spot from last week, while the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll has LSU at 13th, up three spots from last week.

The ranking is LSU’s highest from Collegiate Baseball since the Feb. 10 poll had the Tigers sixth. LSU suffered a three-game sweep the next weekend at home against Kansas, and would eventually fall to as low as 18th in the poll. The Tigers have climbed a total of 10 spots in the past four weeks and re-entered the top 10 last week.

Baseball America had the Tigers as high as No. 8 on Feb. 10, and the Tigers dropped to 16th before beginning its current climb, as LSU has moved up in the poll in each of the last three weeks.

The Tigers fell out of the ESPN/USA Today poll on March 3, but re-entered one week later and has moved up a total of 12 spots in the last month. LSU was as high as seventh in the coaches’ poll on February 10.

LSU (21-10-1, 9-2-1 Southeastern Conference) is percentage points behind Mississippi State for the SEC overall lead and has won all four league series this season and eight in a row dating back to last April. The Tigers took two of three from defending conference champion South Carolina at home this past weekend.

LSU is back in action on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Northwestern State in Natchitoches. The Tigers return home this weekend for a three-game SEC series with West division rival Ole Miss.
