Men’s Tennis Moves to 17th in National Rankings

BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s tennis team moved up in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis rankings for a second-straight week on Wednesday as the Tigers jumped to the No. 17 position in the weekly poll administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

LSU improved three spots in Wednesday’s national rankings after knocking off the 12th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats by a score of 4-2 on Sunday. The victory marked the Tigers’ third win over a top-20 ranked opponent after previously defeating No. 16 Texas, 4-3, and 17th-ranked Auburn, 6-1.

The Southeastern Conference continued to dominate the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis rankings as all 12 of the conference’s schools were ranked among the nation’s top-42 teams.

Florida, the second-ranked team in the country, led the way for the SEC in the poll, followed by No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 13 Kentucky, No. 14 Alabama and then the 17th-ranked Tigers. Closing out the nation’s top 20 were No. 18 Georgia, No. 19 Auburn and No. 20 South Carolina.

The last three SEC teams to be ranked in Wednesday’s poll were No. 31 Arkansas, No. 33 Mississippi State and the 42nd-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. Tennessee captured the SEC Tournament championship a year ago.

The LSU men’s tennis team will next be in action on Friday, April 4, as the Tigers travel to Starkville, Miss., for a crucial SEC Western Division matchup with the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
