BATON ROUGE — After another hour-long rain delay at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium, the LSU women’s tennis team was defeated by the fifth-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs, 6-0, on Monday.
“We’ve played the toughest stretch of our schedule,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “In the past two weeks, we’ve played three of the four teams that made it to the final four last year and they are hard to beat. Florida, Tennessee and Georgia are all really good teams, but I’m pleased with how are team has improved and how they are beginning to mature a little bit.”
With the loss, LSU fell to an overall record of 7-8 on the season and dropped to 1-5 versus Southeastern Conference opponents. The Lady Tigers’ last four matches have all come against top-25 ranked opponents as LSU fell to No. 1 Florida, No. 5 Georgia, No. 11 Tennessee and the 24th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks.
Georgia won its eighth-consecutive match on Monday and remained undefeated in conference play at 6-0. The Lady Bulldogs’ own an overall record of 11-1 on the season and their lone defeat of the 2003 campaign came against second-ranked Southern California at the ITA National Indoor Championships, 5-2.
The Lady Bulldogs earned victories on all six of the singles courts to register a 6-0 win over LSU on Monday. In the closest singles match of the SEC contest, Georgia’s Douglas Wink outlasted the Lady Tigers’ Lauren Seaman, 6-2, 6-7(1), 1-0(7), on court No. 6.
The LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on Sunday, March 23, as the Lady Tigers take a break from conference play to host the Ohio State Buckeyes at 1 p.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
