LAFAYETTE, La. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a 12-over par 588 on Monday at the Louisiana Classics Intercollegiate to finish the day tied for sixth place at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La.
The Tigers struggled in the first round, shooting an 18-over par 306, but rebounded in the second round with a 6-under 282, one of the team’s best rounds of the season. Sophomore Heath West led the way for LSU on Monday, firing a 2-under par 144 to end the day in a tie for sixth place with teammate Tucker Ervin. West, who tied for eighth at the LSU Spring Invitational last weekend, shot rounds of 72-70, and Ervin shot a first-round 74 followed by a career-low round of 4-under 68 in the second round.
Senior John Humphries, who won his first-ever tournament last week at the LSU Spring Invitational, shot a first-round 11-over 81 but came back with a 3-under 69 in round two to tie for 42nd place. Sophomore Jeff Riemann is tied for 74th place at 14-over 156 and freshman Aaron Smith is tied for 77th at 15-over 157. Tulsa’s David Inglis is the leading individual after Monday’s play, with a 5-under par 137.
SMU leads the 15-team field after 36 holes as the Mustangs shot an 8-under par 568 Monday to lead Tulsa by four strokes. Texas A&M is third at 2-under 574, Southern Mississippi is in fourth at 9-over 585, and North Texas is in fifth place at 10-over 586. The Tigers are only three shots out of fourth place with one round to play.
“Well we had a tough first round but came back strong with our best round of the season in round two,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We just need to come out and play with consistency on Tuesday and see what happens,” said Jones.
LSU will tee off at 7:40 a.m. on Tuesday for the final round. The Tigers are paired with Southern Miss and Texas Tech.
