Humphries Named SEC Golfer of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — LSU senior John Humphries was named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday.

Humphries, a native of Alexandria, La., won the LSU Spring Invitational last weekend in Baton Rouge, firing a career-low score of 5-under par 211 to win his first-career tournament.

Humphries has finished in the top 10 in each of the Tigers’ last three tournaments. He leads the team with a 72.1 stroke average, six top-20 finishes, three top10’s, and 20 rounds played.

The Tigers picked up their first tournament win of the season and will now participate in the Louisiana Classics Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, on March 10-11 at Oakborne Country Club in Lafayette.

“This is a big honor for John but I know that there is an even bigger award that he would like to iwn and that is SEC Player of the Year,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “I am very proud of John though because he had a great tournament last weekend and really deserved this.”

Humphries is the first LSU golfer to win the award since Heath West was honored last March. He joins Vanderbilt’s Brandt Snedeker and Florida’s James Vargas as those who have won the award this season. It is the first SEC Golfer of the Week honor for Humphries in his career.
