Women’s Track Remains First, Men Fall to Fifth in Rankings

BATON ROUGE — For the fourth straight week and the sixth time this season the LSU women’s track team is ranked first in the nation in the Trackwire 25 power rankings, released Wednesday. After holding steady in the No. 3 position for the last three weeks the men’s team slipped to fifth in the national standings.

The Lady Tigers stay atop the field with 52 points, while No. 2 Florida edges closer to the top spot with 48 points. North Carolina (42), Texas (41) and Stanford (41) round out the women’s top five.

On the men’s side, Arkansas remains No.1 with 61 points after claiming the SEC Championship over the weekend. Fellow SEC competitors South Carolina (39) and Florida (38) moved into second and third, respectively, while Nebraska follows in fourth (31) and the Tigers slip to fifth (25).

Individually, the Lady Tigers have two athletes still ranked No.1 in the nation in their signature events. Junior Muna Lee remains on top of both the 60 and 200-meter dash standings after winning her third straight 200 title and placing second in the 60 meters at the SEC Championships last weekend. In addition, senior Marian Burnett owns the nation’s No. 1 ranking in the 800 meters. Burnett won her second straight conference title in the event Sunday and currently leads the nation with a blazing time of 2:04.57.

The LSU track and field team returns to action next weekend, March 14-15, when it travels to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
