BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s golf team opens its 2003 spring campaign in the warm climate of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Friday with the annual Lady Puerto Rico Golf Classic.
The tournament, scheduled for 36 holes on Friday and a final round on Saturday, is hosted by Purdue and will be the start of a four tournament swing that includes the playing of the annual LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic at the University Club here in Baton Rouge in April.
The LSU women’s golf team struggled to put together consistent rounds in the fall season, but will look for more of that consistency in the spring.
One thing about the venue for the opening tournament is a chance to play in an environment that allows an event to be played in good weather conditions.
“That’s one thing about choosing this event,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We have our new indoor area we can practice from at the University Club, but the weather hasn’t been the best for consistent practice, but a lot of the teams in the event have had the same problems. I think by the end of the season we hope to be a much improved team than we showed in the fall.”
LSU will go with a lineup of Brooke Shelton, who led the team with a stroke average in the fall of 77.25, along with Isabel Dornellas, Devon Day, Rachel Overstreet and newcomer Vicky Meyer of Brazil, who signed with the Tigers in the early signing period. She is a past Brazilian Junior Champion.
