Track & Field Teams Hold Positions in Rankings

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s track and field team retained the nation’s No. 1 ranking, while the men sit in third for the second straight week according to the latest Trackwire 25 powers rankings, released Tuesday.

It marks the second consecutive week, and the fourth time in six weeks that, the Lady Tigers have sat atop the nation’s elite in the weekly power rankings. Awarded 68 points, LSU dominates the standings as No. 2 North Carolina’s comes in with just 43 points. Texas and Florida are tied for third with 41 points apiece, while South Carolina rounds out the women’s top five with 35 points.

The SEC owns the top five spots in the men’s standings as Arkansas is ranked No. 1 (56 points) for the second week in a row, while South Carolina comes in at second (49) and the Tigers follow in third (42). Mississippi State (30) and Florida (28) sit in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Individually, junior Muna Lee continues her dominance in the weekly Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the nation’s top-12 athletes and relay teams in each NCAA event. Lee is ranked No. 1 in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes for the fifth straight week after winning both event titles at the prestigious Armory Invitational in New York City over the weekend.

Two other Lady Tigers have earned No. 1 rankings as well, as Marian Burnett sits atop the field in the 800 meters and Nicole Toney has earned top billing in the triple jump. Both Burnett and Toney claimed national titles in their respective events at the NCAA Indoor Championships a year ago.

LSU track and field returns to action Friday when it hosts the LSU Twilight Invitational at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. Competition in the field events is slated to begin at 3 p.m., while running events will follow at 6 p.m.
