Track Teams Compete at Prestigious Armory Invitational

BATON ROUGE — The top-ranked women and the third-ranked men of the LSU track and field team return to action this weekend when they travel to New York City for the prestigious Armory Invitational. The two-day meet will be held Feb. 14-15 at the Armory Track and Field Center.

LSU will face some of the top athletes in the nation as over 60 collegiate teams are scheduled to compete. Teams highlighting the talented poll of competition include Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

LSU is coming off a phenomenal performance at the Gator Invitational a week ago, as five athletes turned in NCAA automatic marks and 11 others posted provisional qualifying times. Senior Marian Burnett and junior Hazelann Regis were the latest Lady Tigers to earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in the running events. Burnett turned in a blistering time of 2:04.57 in the 800 meters to automatically qualify, while Regis posted a time of 53.21 in the 400 meters to secure herself a spot at the national championships.

Junior Lolo Jones clocked 8.13 in the 60-meter hurdles and John Moffitt jumped an NCAA-best 25-10 3/4 in the long jump, as both reached NCAA automatic standards as well.

Following the Armory Invitational, the LSU track and field team returns home for the LSU Twilight Invitational, Feb. 21. The meet will serve as the Tigers’ final tune-up before heading to Gainesville, Fla., for the SEC Indoor Championships, March 1-2.
