HOUSTON — The LSU women’s tennis team is prepared to compete in its first road contest of the 2003 dual-match season on Sunday as the Lady Tigers face off with the Houston Cougars at noon at the John E. Hoff varsity tennis courts.
“This is going to be a crucial match for us,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “Houston always plays us very tough and they have a really good team this season. We’ve had a good week of practice and now we’re just going to have to come out, overcome the weather and play to the best of our ability.”
LSU heads into Sunday’s non-conference matchup with an overall record of 4-1 on the season after falling to Florida State, 4-3, last weekend. With the loss, the Lady Tigers snapped a four match winning streak and dropped their second-consecutive contest versus the Seminoles.
The LSU women’s tennis team opened the 2003 campaign by recording decisive victories over Louisiana Tech, Centenary, Louisiana-Monroe and Southern. In their first four matches, the Lady Tigers outscored their opponents 27-0.
“We’ve been playing some really good tennis so far,” Minnis said. “I think that our girls are competing at a very high level right now and it’s time to see how well we play on the road. We have an extremely young team and the first road match of the season is always a big test.”
Houston enters the contest with a 2-2 overall record after defeating Louisiana Tech on Saturday. With the win, Houston snapped a two-match losing streak and the Cougars picked up their second home victory of the season.
The Cougars’ two losses of the 2003 campaign came on the road against Texas Christian, 6-1, and Southern Methodist, 7-0.
