BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s basketball team will look to get off to the best Southeastern Conference start in its history on Sunday when the fourth-ranked Lady Tigers travel to face 12th-ranked Mississippi State in Starkville.
Tipoff for the contest is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised to a regional audience by SEC-TV, which can be seen in the Baton Rouge area on cable ch. 37. The game will also be broadcast on 107.3 FM as well as the Internet at www.LSUsports.net.
The Lady Tigers, 19-1 overall and 7-1 in SEC action, are coming off a 69-66 road win over South Carolina on Thursday. LSU’s 7-1 record equals the best start in school history, tying the mark established by the 1999-2000 team.
Mississippi State enters the contest with a 16-5 overall mark and a 5-3 league record. The Bulldogs are coming off a 76-71 loss to Georgia on Thursday.
“Mississippi State has just an outstanding team,” LSU coach Sue Gunter said. “The have two great players and a nice complement of other players. Tan White and LaToya Thomas are about as good as it gets. What we have to do now is just settle in and stay focused on what we have to do. We need to go up and try to execute and do a good job and hope that the two of them do not have career nights and see what happens. It is a huge game for us.”
Thomas, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, is averaging 24.3 points and 8.2 rebounds a contest, while White, a 5-8 sophomore guard, averages 18.1 points and 6.1 rebounds a game.
The Lady Tigers will counter with freshman sensation Seimone Augustus, who is averaging 15.7 points and 5.3 rebounds a contest. Augustus, who earned SEC Player of the Week honors on Monday, is coming off a 26-point effort in LSU’s win over South Carolina.
After Sunday, the Lady Tigers return home on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest against Alabama in the Maravich Assembly Center in a game that will be televised by Cox Sports Television.
