BATON ROUGE — For the fourth straight week the Tiger track and field team is ranked No. 1 in the nation according to the Trackwire 25 power rankings, released today. The Lady Tigers sit in the No. 2 slot behind SEC foe Florida in the women’s rankings.
The Tigers retained their No. 1 position with 62 points, holding off second-ranked Arkansas (57) for the second straight week. Stanford (32), Florida (27) and Tennessee (26) round out the top five in the standings.
For the second consecutive week the Lady Tigers sit behind top-ranked Florida, who knocked LSU out of the No. 1 position it held for the first two weeks of the season. The Gators are just ahead in the standings with 60 points compared to the Tigers’ 57 points. UCLA (40), North Carolina (38) and South Carolina (37) comprise the remainder to the nation’s top five.
Individually, LSU has four athletes and a relay team that are ranked No. 1 in the Dandy Dozen, a weekly power ranking of the nation’s top-12 athletes and relay teams in each track and field event.
Junior short sprinter Muna Lee paces the Lady Tiger squad earning top billing in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes, two events in which she has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Fellow junior Nicole Toney is the only other Lady Tiger with a No. 1 ranking, a distinction she earned in her signature event, the triple jump, after posting an NCAA automatic mark over the weekend.
On the men’s side, Robert Parham tops the field in the 200 meters, while junior John Moffitt owns the No. 1 spot in the long jump. The Tigers’ 4×400-meter relay team of Pete Coley, Marlon Greensword, Bennie Brazell and Kelly Willie lay claim to the Tigers’ final No. 1 ranking after clocking a nation-leading 3:06.54 in the event nearly three weeks ago.
The LSU track and field program returns to action Feb. 9 when it travels to Gainesville, Fla. for the Gator Invitational.
