BATON ROUGE — LSU’s fifth-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team faces a tough task on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host No. 18 Georgia in a Southeastern Conference game at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Lady Tigers (17-1, 5-1 SEC) have won back-to-back games since losing at Arkansas, including a 70-59 victory over then No. 18 Vanderbilt a week ago.
The Lady Bulldogs (14-4, 5-0 SEC) enter the game riding an eight game winning streak, including all five conference games. Georgia is coming off a 71-59 win against Kentucky last Sunday.
Freshman Seimone Augustus leads LSU. The Baton Rouge native is averaging 14.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and poured in a game-high 21 points in last week’s win over Vanderbilt. Senior Aiysha Smith is not far behind, averaging 11.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing.
Smith, a 6-2 post player, will have her hands full against Georgia. The Lady Bulldogs are led by 6-6 Kara Braxton and 6-5 Christi Thomas. Braxton is scoring 16.2 points and grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game, while Thomas is posting 15.8 points and 7.9 board and contest.
This will be the 25th meeting between the two schools. Georgia leads the series 17-7 and has won five of the last six meetings. The Lady Bulldogs also lead the series 6-2 in games played in Baton Rouge, including six straight wins in the PMAC.
Following Sunday’s game, LSU hits the road for a pair of games next week starting at South Carolina on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST.
