BATON ROUGE — After wins over then 22nd-ranked Kentucky and Centenary over the weekend the LSU gymnastics team improved to 13th in the national rankings, released Jan. 20.
With national rankings based on a team’s high score until Jan. 27, the Tigers 195.825 team score at Kentucky moved them up one spot in the polls from last week’s No. 14 ranking. UCLA sits atop the nation’s elite for the second straight week with a high score of 198.275, while Georgia (197.325), Arizona State (197.300), Alabama (197.050) and Utah (196.800) round out the nation’s top-five.
LSU is also ranked among the top-20 in each of the four individual events.
The Lady Tigers’ owns its highest event ranking, fifth, on the bars after scoring a season best 49.200 against Kentucky. LSU is also ranked 12th on the vault (49.000), 13th on the floor (49.275) and 20th on the beam (48.800).
Individually, freshman April Burkholder is the only Lady Tiger to have cracked the top-25 so far this season. The Houston, Texas, native is currently ranked 13th on the floor after posting a career best mark of 9.925 on the event. She also just missed the top-25 in the all-around this week as she sits in 26th with a high score of 39.325.
The Lady Tigers continue competition Jan. 24, when they travel to Auburn for a dual meet beginning at 7 p.m.
