ATLANTA — LSU’s 24th-ranked doubles combination of Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley advanced to the semifinal round of competition at the prestigious Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday here in Atlanta, Ga.
Fisher/Hazley, the second-seeded doubles team in the field of the four-day tournament, earned its third-consecutive victory of the spring season on Saturday by defeating their teammates Peter Richman and Paul White, 8-2.
Richman/White finished the 2003 SEC Indoor Championships with a 2-1 record.
With the win, Fisher/Hazley reached the semifinals of the tournament and will face Georgia’s doubles team comprised of Bo Hodge and Nicolas Boeker on Sunday. Hodge/Boeker earned a trip to the semifinal round by knocking off Florida’s 37th-ranked duo of Eleazar Magallan and Olivier Levant, 9-8(5).
In singles play, LSU’s Richman ended his streak of three-straight victories over a top-100 ranked opponent on Saturday as No. 29 Janne Holmia of Florida handed the Tigers’ sophomore a 6-3, 6-4 loss in the quarterfinal round.
Despite the defeat, Richman turned in a 3-1 record on the weekend and upped his overall record to 7-5.
LSU’s Ross and Rafael Corazza each defeated opponents from Mississippi State in singles consolation play on Saturday. Ross knocked off Jerome LeBelicard, 6-3, 6-4, while Corazza used a win in a first-set tiebreaker to boost him to victory against Michael Hailey.
Play will resume at the 2003 SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday at 9 a.m. (CST) here at the Racquet Club of the South in Atlanta, Ga.
