BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s swimming and diving team will open up the spring season with a non-conference meet against Houston on Friday at 4 p.m. in Houston, Texas.
The meet will consist of 12 events including both 1- and 3-meter diving and the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Tigers are 17-5 all-time against the Houston women and have won the past 12 meetings in the series.
The Lady Tigers are coming off of two wins against the University of Tampa and the University of Indianapolis on Dec. 16 and will face Rice and Texas A&M on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Sophomore Jessica Wantz and senior Barb Gorst each competed at the University of Georgia Diving Invitational Jan. 3-5 in Athens, Ga., with each winning one event at the meet and Wantz subsequently being named the Southeastern Conference’s Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after scoring a 535.35 in the 3-meter, the best overall mark by any diver in the conference this season.
“This is our first opportunity to get back into competition after being off for quite a while,” said LSU head coach Jeff Cavana. “We have been training hard and had a few divers compete recently but now is the chance for everyone to get back in the swing of things and get off to a good start.”
“Houston has some great divers but are not as deep as far as swimmers but they have some good athletes and it is always a good meet with them,” said Cavana.
The Lady Tigers are currently 4-3 overall this season.
