ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The LSU women’s tennis team recorded victories in four of its six singles matches on Sunday as the Lady Tigers finished strong in the final day of the inaugural Michigan Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich.
“We played extremely well in singles today, but I wasn’t pleased with how we did in the doubles competition,” said LSU head coach Tony Minnis. “We won four singles matches and we were actually just two tiebreakers short of winning all six matches. All in all, I was impressed with how we played against some very tough competition this weekend.”
LSU’s four singles victories on Sunday were earned by Daysi Espinal, Camilla Caliari, Lauren Seaman and Bonnie White. Espinal, the Lady Tigers’ talented freshman from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record by defeating Kansas’ Emily Haylock, 6-3, 6-2.
Seaman and White also recorded straight-set victories at the Varsity Tennis Courts, while LSU’s Caliari needed three sets to knock off Kansas’ Christine Skoda, 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 1-0(3). Caliari finished the weekend with an overall record of 1-2.
“This was a good opening weekend for us,” Minnis said. “It helped to us get rid of some of the rustiness and now we just need to continue to prepare for the dual-match season. Hopefully, we’ll have a good couple of weeks of practice and we’ll be able to remain healthy.”
The LSU women’s tennis team will next be in action on January 25 as the Lady Tigers open their dual-match season against both Louisiana Tech and Centenary beginning at 9 a.m. at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium.
