Gym Team Posts Solid Performance in Final Intrasquad

BATON ROUGE — Strong event performances on the beam and floor led the LSU gymnastics team to a solid 194.400 team score Friday night in its final intrasquad meet before the holiday break.

“I felt that beam and floor were fantastic tonight,” said LSU head coach D-D Breaux. “I was happy with the vault performances as well, we were conservative, but very solid. However, bars continues to be a work in progress.”

The Lady Tigers concluded the intrasquad on the floor with their highest event total of the evening, a 49.050. Freshman Terin Martinjak turned in a near flawless 9.900 performance and was followed closely behind junior Chelsea Richard and freshman April Burkholder, who each turned in marks of 9.850.

Earlier in the evening the Lady Tigers posted scores of 48.850 on the vault and 48.700 on the beam, but struggled on the bars recording just a 47.800.

Burkholder and Martinjak scored a 9.900 and a 9.800, respectively, to pace the Lady Tiger squad on the vault, while a pair of 9.800s by sophomores Lauren Companioni and Annie Gagnon led the beam team. Companioni’s was the team’s top bar performer posting a score of 9.750.

“Overall, I think the team did a good job,” said Breaux. “We are a very young team that has the potential to be very good later in the season and I feel we are making substantial progress towards that goal.”

The Lady Tigers open up the 2003 campaign Jan. 10 when they travel to Nassau, Bahamas to face Illinois, Maryland, Towson and William & Mary in the Bahamas Breeze Invitational.
