BATON ROUGE — Marci Kornegay, a former standout golfer at Ole Miss and an assistant coach for the LSU women’s golf team for the past year, announced her resignation from LSU Thursday to accept a position as assistant golf coach at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S. C.
Kornegay, a native of Savannah, Ga., will be working with long-time coach Eddie Weldon who is both the men’s and women’s head coaches in title with Kornegay taking on primary responsibility for the women’s team at the Big South Conference school.
Kornegay is a 2001 graduate of Ole Miss where she served as team captain during her senior year and was a three-time holder of the Rebel award for cumulative low score. She was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll while majoring in leisure management.
“She was an excellent player in the collegiate ranks and has been an assistant coach for a top 20 program at LSU,” said Weldon. “Marci brings a wealth of experience and she is a tireless recruiter and a tireless coach. We know she is going to do a great job for Winthrop University.”
“We hate to see Marci leave us, but the job she has done for LSU and our program is tremendous,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “The work she did on our two tournament this past year made them showcase events that schools can model after. She has worked hard to bring us players that are going to help the future of our program and I know she will have nothing but success working with a fine coach like Eddie Weldon.”
