Baseball Adds Two More Signees

BATON ROUGE — Two more baseball prospects have signed national letters-of-intent with LSU, coach Smoke Laval announced Tuesday.

The latest signees are catcher/outfielder Nick Stavinoha of San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College and shortstop Lance Zawadski of St. John’s High School in Ashland, Mass.

The signings increase LSU’s final total of fall signees to nine. The recruits are scheduled to enroll at LSU in the fall of 2003.

Stavinoha, a 6-2, 215-pound right-handed batter, belted 25 home runs last season as a freshman at San Jacinto JC. The Houston native is a versatile performer who could see action at catcher, first base, or in the outfield.

Zawadski, a 5-11, 180-pound switch hitter, was rated No. 41 in the Baseball America magazine Top 50 list of high school prospects.

LSU’s earlier signees during the fall period included outfielder Steven Broschofsky of Jesuit High in New Orleans, La.; infielder Jordan Mayer of Alexandria (La.) Senior High; right-handed pitcher Cain Byrd of Southwood High in Shreveport, La.; left-handed pitcher Matt Greenwich of Parkview Baptist High in Baton Rouge, La.; catcher Bobby Wilson of St. Petersburg (Fla.) College; right-handed pitcher Roland Rodriguez of Southridge High in Miami; and infielder Eric Duncan of Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J.
