BATON ROUGE — LSU’s second-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team returns home for the first time in almost two weeks to host Alabama State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
LSU (5-0) has been off for a week since defeating Florida International last Saturday in the championship game of the FIU/Herald Thanksgiving Classic. It was LSU’s fifth game in eight days.
Alabama State (1-4) is coming off a loss at Tulane on Thursday, but won at UAB the previous Saturday.
Sue Gunter, in her 21st season as head coach of the Lady Tigers, will take the floor for the 600th time at LSU. She is just 10 victories away from reaching 400 in her LSU career.
Freshman Seimone Augustus leads the Lady Tigers into the game. The Baton Rouge native is averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures in each of her five games at LSU. Junior Temeka Johnson is also averaging double digits with 10.0 points per game and leads the team with 7.8 assists per outing.
Shameka Jackson leads ASU with 17.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest.
This will be the second meeting between the two schools. LSU won the only other meeting, 87-69, on Dec. 1, 1990, in the Tallahassee Hilton Classic hosted by Florida State.
LSU will take a 10-day break for finals after the game and resume with the WOMENSCOLLEGEHOOPS.com Classic on Dec. 18 and 19th. The Lady Tigers will face Ohio at 7 p.m. on the 18th, while New Orleans will play Louisville at 5 p.m. in the opening game of the tournament.
