BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Lady Tigers basketball team move up one spot to No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released on Monday afternoon.
LSU defeated Florida Atlantic, Washington State and Florida International during the week. The wins over WSU and FIU came in Miami over the weekend to capture the FIU/Herald Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Tigers got past the Cougars 87-50 and then defeated the host Golden Panthers 68-54 in the championship game.
The No. 2 ranking is the highest for LSU since the end of the 1977-78 when the Lady Tigers were also ranked second in the poll. It is the highest ranking for LSU under head coach Sue Gunter, who is in her 21st season in Baton Rouge. Gunter had taken the Lady Tigers as high as No. 5 during the 1983-84 season.
LSU will put its No. 2 ranking to the test by hosting Alabama State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Maravich Assembly Center.
