Humphries Sixth, Men’s Golf Eighth in Illinois After Day 1

GOLF, Ill. — The LSU men’s golf team shot an 18-over par 594 on Monday to sit in eighth place after two rounds at the Windon Memorial Classic at the Glen View Club in Golf, Ill.

The Tigers, tied for seventh after one round, shot a 6–over 294 in the first round and then a 12-over 300 in round two. LSU is coming off of a 13th-place finish at the Cleveland Golf/Kiawh Island Intercollegiate three weeks ago in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Senior John Humphries is tied for sixth place individually after two rounds at 1-under par 143, only three shots of the lead. Humphries fired a 3-under 69 in the morning round but then shot a 74 in round two in the afternoon and is tied with Aron Price and Travis Mobley, both of Georgia Southern, for sixth. The 69 in Humphries’ lowest of the season and the team’s best round so far in the first two tournaments. Sophomore Heath West is tied for 20th place at 3-over 147. The Dothan, Ala., native, shot 72-75 on Monday and is looking for the seventh top-20 finish of his career.

Sophomore Jeff Riemann is tied for 29th place at 5–over 149 after shooting 75-74. He tied for 47th place in the Tigers’ first tournament earlier this month. Jason Horrell made his season debut and shot 78-77 Monday to tie for 52nd place with former teammate David Elmore, now at Georgia Southern. Horrell shot 11-over par 155 for the day. Neil Self also made his first start of the season and is in 66th place at 19-over 163 after shooting 82-81.

Host Northwestern is leading the tournament after 36 holes at 3-under par 573. Duke is second at 2-over 578 and then Stanford, North Florida, and Oregon are currently third through fifth, each separated by one stroke. The Tigers are only 10 strokes behind fifth-place Oregon, who is 8-over par after two rounds.

“We played okay today, but this is a tough field and a great course and we need to play more consistently tomorrow if we are going to improve our score,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We need to come back out here and play well tomorrow in the final round.”

The 13-team field will tee off Tuesday morning to complete the tournament with the final 18 holes. LSU will next participate in the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla., on Oct. 14-15.
