GOLF, Ill. — The LSU men’s golf team will travel north for the longest trip of the season to participate in the seventh edition of the Windon Memorial Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Glen View Club in Golf, Ill.
The Tigers have not played since finishing in a tie for 13th place at the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Sept. 9-10 at Kiawah Island, S.C. LSU will make its initial appearance at the Windon Classic, a tournament hosted by Northwestern University and played on a course that has previously hosted such events as the Western Open, U.S. Open, and U.S. Amateur.
LSU will feature a new lineup for the tournament this week. Sophomores Neil Self and Jason Horrell will make their first starts of the season for LSU on Monday. Sophomore Jeff Riemann, sophomore Heath West and senior John Humphries will each start in their second-straight tournament this season. Humphries led LSU at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate as he placed in a tie for 27th , finishing at 10-over par 226.
Riemann and Self will both be appearing in just their second tournament at LSU. Riemann finished in a tie for 47th place in the Tigers first tournament and Self has not played since last season. Horrell saw action in 11 tournaments last season. West was an All-SEC Second Team pick a year ago as a true freshman and is making his 14th collegiate start on Monday.
“We are very anxious to play in a tournament because it has been a long time since we have played,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “This is going to be a tough tournament because of the talent that this field has. There are some very good teams this year like Northwestern and Stanford, and this is historically a really great tournament.”
The field includes 13 teams and is highlighted by Kent State, Stanford, Oklahoma State and host Northwestern. Kent State is the only one of the schools in the 2002 field that has won a Windon title. The Golden Flashes won the event in its inaugural year (1993) and then again in 1999. The Windon is not held every year, as Oklahoma won the last edition in 2000, but is not included in the field this season.
The tournament will consist of 54 holes on Monday and then the final 18 on Tuesday. Glen View Club is a par-72 course with a yardage of 6,750. The rest if the field is comprised of Florida State, Georgia Southern, Duke, UC-Davis, Oregon, North Florida, Houston, and Northern Illinois.
